Car Battery Voltage When Off

To get a true voltage reading of the cars battery it is important to measure the voltage after the car has been sat for a period with the engine off, preferably overnight, this provides you with the “car battery open circuit voltage” or also know as the “resting voltage”. Anything below that will let you know that your alternator needs to be replaced.

There are two conditions to measure your car's battery.

Car battery voltage when off. With a volt meter measure the voltage drop across the 1 ohm resistor. If is is lower on the terminals you have a bad connection usually caused by corrosion, which is very common. I charged the battery up again today to 12.3v.

A fully charged battery should read 12.6 volts or more with the engine off. A 12v lead acid battery should not lose any voltage or charge overnight, but voltage is a fragile measure of state of charge. Once the vehicle is running, the alternator will kick in and take over the task of powering the car while also recharging the battery.

Car battery voltage will change depending on its condition. Good information for the less knowledgeble. The battery needs to be disconnected from any current draw for several hours to use voltage as a state of change, other w.

That is because certain operations in the vehicle never are supposed to. The exact voltage varies with the battery, how quickly you read it, and the state of battery charge. You may think these numbers look high, but you should be aware that the porsche taycan, for example, runs at a nominal rate of 800 volts.

The ideal car battery voltage with the engine running is between 13.7 and 14.7v. It should show no less. A mechanic can measure the voltage in the battery, in order to determine whether it needs to be replaced.

A 75% charged battery will measure closer to 12.45 volts while anything below 12 volts indicates the battery is effectively discharged. The resting voltage should ideally be no lower than 12.6v. You should measure right on the battery posts and then again on the cable terminals.

If the battery is continually going flat, it. A fully charged battery should read 12.6 volts or more with the engine off. When the engine is off the battery open circuit voltage is 12.9 volts.

When the car is running. This does not mean the battery is good and not having 12.6v does not mean it is bad, it just means the electrical system and battery should be checked. Voltage drop on car battery.

A fully charged car battery voltage should be 12.6v or above, this is with the engine off. When a car drops, for instance, from 12.6 to 12.0, there will be 75% difference. T he voltage to amperage balance is key in the construction of any electric car.

A fully charged car battery has 12.6 volts. Remember that this is not a valid reading since the alternator is actively charging it. The off position is to measure the battery voltage itselves, while the running engine is to measure the charging system voltage.

Disconnect the other battery.with the 1 ohm resistor installed enough current will flow keeping all memory circuits active. What to do when the car’s battery is dead. What is a healthy car battery voltage?

The battery voltage is a good indicator of the state of charge of the battery. A good battery should be between 12.4 to 12.6v at rest, it will drop some if any accesories are on (lights, radio, phone or gps chargers, flashers, etc) if you have an automotive voltage/amperage tester available, you can do a load test on the battery (hook it up and load it by 1/2 the cca rating of the battery for 15 seconds) if it drops below 10v, it's time for a new battery. The voltage drop reading represents the current draw.

Ignoring it will only make it worse and a faulty alternator will slowly damage the battery. Bear in mind that when a battery goes down to 12.2v it's actually only 50% charged, and below 12v it's classed as discharged. Without an adequate charge, a car battery will be too weak to start your vehicle when you turn the ignition key.

With the engine just shut off, the battery voltage should be 13.2 volts to 13.8 volts. Measuring your car battery’s voltage can be a great way to determine how charged your battery might be. An easy way to test @alephzero's theory would be to repeat your experiments, but this time disconnecting the battery from the car when you turn the car off.

Discussion starter • #1 • oct 17, 2018 (edited by moderator) battery voltage seems to hover around 12.3/12/4 but will sometimes fluctuate up to 13.9.car idles and drives fine however when the car is in auto stop mode the car will let the voltage drop to 11.6 and the car will either not start back up or electronics will shut off as it’s. A fully charged battery ideally measures at 12.66 volts and above, but 12.6 volts at 80 degrees, 12.588 degrees at 30 degrees, and 12.516 volts at 0 degrees are acceptable readings. Here are some recap for the battery voltage test

If measured at this point, the battery reading you will get will be anywhere between 13.5 to 14.7 volts. The first is with engine off (it's mean your car engine in off condition) and the second is with running engine. Obviously, a 60ma drain over 2 days shouldn't drain a full volt off the battery.

When the car is at idle, the voltage reading of the battery should range between 13v and 14.6v. This car battery test determines how fully charged your battery is. The standing unloaded battery voltage, after the vehicle has been off overnight without load, should be very close to 12.6 volts.

With the engine off, you should get a reading of 12.6 volts. There is a very big difference when a car battery drops even a small amount of voltage. Simply replace it and you’ll end up saving money in the end.

There are two ways to do this. This test is done twelve hours after shutting off your car, so that any surface charge can dissipate. If the battery still drops to approximately 12.1 volts during a given day, then it's because the battery is old and worn out, not because the car is drawing power from it.

Its power drops from 100% to 25%.
